Why You Should Be Writing A Journal!

While no one has really proved why we have dreams when we sleep, I subscribe to the theory that it is, in part, the mind’s way of processing the huge collection of thoughts we accumulate in the day. It is a subconscious healing – a kind of cognitive reboot.

We can give our brain a helping hand and discover more about ourselves – our hopes, dreams and fears – by dedicating just a few minutes each day to writing a journal.

Instead of checking Twitter, reading work emails or gazing out of the window in spare moments, dedicate that time to transcribing your innermost thoughts – it will soon become like enjoying a favourite meal.

Why Write A Journal?

  • It is a healing process. By reflecting on the events of the day, we can train ourselves to avoid negativity and build on the positives.
  • It is important for decision-making. By taking time to analyse the issues of the day, we differentiate the causes from the effects and arrive at logical decisions that we are less likely to regret.
  • It has been proven to help reduce stress, increase self-esteem and help to deal with traumatic experiences – meaning you will learn to shout less at your family members, pets, utensils and the computer as you appreciate yourself!
  • Research has also shown that people who write journals have improved psychological wellbeing and stronger immune systems. Yes, a diary entry a day could keep the doctor away!
  • Do you often go to bed with thoughts running aimlessly through your mind? Writing a few down will help clear the day’s backlog, let you sleep sounder and begin tomorrow with confidence
  • A journal also helps to preserve memories for the future. Prepare to impress everyone with your uncanny ability to put a face to a name!
  • Gain motivation from certain sayings, quotes or snippets of advice? Record your favourites in a journal and reflect on them later.
  • It’s not uncommon to be awoken from a thrilling, vivid dream, full of inspiration, only for the feeling and memories of the dream to quickly fade. By adopting the habit of journal keeping, it will soon become second nature to quickly jot down magical ideas or inventive thoughts. This will ensure you don’t lose priceless wisdom on how to resolve all the world’s problems!

1 cup coconut milk
2 tbsp honey ( organic liquid, can also be Manuka honey )
fresh strawberries or raspberries
coconut chips

Preparation:

1. Mix coconut milk, coconut yogurt, and honey and mix until combined.
2. Add chia seeds and give it a good stir.
3. Divide into three portions and cover with plastic wrap.
4. Let sit for 1 hour or until set.
5. Decorate with fresh berries and coconut chips.
6. Feast on and enjoy!

Everyone, Snooze In Style Now!

1. Make sure your bedroom is free from clutter, TV, phones and computers! No tech stuff around you when you sleep, the radiation is really bad for your health, it interferes with your body¹s circadian rhythm and not only sleep!

2. Set a bedtime regime to go to bed, from deducting eight hours from the time you need to wake up.

3. Get blackout curtains or a sleep mask! It is important not to stop our melatonin production during the night as the light is entering our eyes.

4. Blue colours are nice to use in your bedroom, like for walls, art works, furniture … just where your eye falls when you are in bed! Blue is very calming and helps to drop your heart rate and blood pressure and has a drowsy effect on the body and mind! Check out my fab fav below!

5. Write a journal before falling a sleep, it will help to calm your thoughts and mind! I always find that when you write you worry less! it helps to not forget things you need to do for the next day or helps to reflect away any important thoughts. Just write it down and allow the thoughts leave your mind. And it will make your eyes tiered! I love journals and diaries!

Success For A Woman 101

I grew up listening to the cliché, “behind every successful man is a woman.” You and I have heard it repeated countless times, especially when a successful male entrepreneur, political leader or professional are being honoured. The woman gets a mention for her support for her man. But it is just that – a mention.

Have you ever taken time to ask yourself whether the wife, girlfriend or lover of a successful man is also successful? If we phrased the threadbare statement the other way round would it still be valid and acceptable to society? This is what I mean: Behind every successful woman is a man.

I guess you will have a problem agreeing with this statement especially if you consider the history behind successful women you know. Very few, if any, successful women can attribute their prosperity to men. I want to state this from the onset because I intend to discuss other approaches to success for a woman with no man involved, at least not significantly.

Tested and proven strategies that bring success to a woman…

The approaches I will suggest here are not silver bullets towards success for a woman. They will not yield success overnight. Do not expect that you will miraculously wake up successful simply because you followed what I am proposing in this article.

I have endeavoured to study successful women and to come up with the principles that most of them used to arrive at their current statuses. There is no particular formula or way of succeeding. How you mix and match these principles is largely dependent on you and you alone.

These principles have been used by women entrepreneurs, actresses, musicians, talk show hosts, TV personalities, sportswomen, politicians, academicians and women in all careers you know of. Each of them has found success in their own ways.

 Here are 12 crucial principles that result in success for a woman:

1. Meditate Regularly

It is unfortunate that many of us associate meditation with yoga and conclude that because we are not Indians or Buddhists, meditation is not our thing. What many women do not know is that meditation is not a preserve of any religion. Anyone can and should meditate.

Most successful women have regular meditation sessions. They take time to connect with their inner self. When you meditate, you take time off from your daily activities, create some quiet time, and imbibe positive energy.

Make meditation part of your life. That is what you need to interact effectively with colleagues, customers, your boss and family members. Further, after a hard day’s work, you need to tap into your inner reserves to get the energy you need to work on other projects.

  1. Take One Day At A Time

Success for a woman comes after a hard day’s work. There is no genuine success that will come your way of you don’t work for it. It is crucial therefore that you take every day as it comes. The trouble of a single day is enough for that day. Why try to deal with yesterday or tomorrow on the present day?

Plan your day and handle what is humanly possible. That is what success for a woman entails. Remember there is that child waiting for you at home, or there will be at some point. Juggling between your family, career and societal demands is challenging, but if you want to be successful, you must live one day at a time.

  1. Adapt To Situations

Success for a woman means getting into many situations that demand different attitudes and reactions. Such situations arise at work, at home, in business negotiations, in the social scene and so on. How will you balance different situations?

To be regarded as a successful woman you must be ready to face the good days as well as the bad ones. The mark of a great woman is the ability to come out happy and triumphant at the end of whatever situations you are facing.

  1. Learn To Shift Your Mental Focus

Success for a woman requires a lot of deliberate mental effort. For example, what happens when there are unpleasant issues confronting you and you feel you cannot get rid of them? Remember if you had a bad day at home it is possible to come with those feelings to work and project them on others.

The solution lies in shifting your thoughts to something pleasant. It is not an easy task, but it is necessary. Even when unpleasant thoughts invade your mind at night think about the things that make you happy e.g. your children, travel or shopping. Concentrate on your previous success to find motivation for current challenges.

  1. Set Priorities

When pursuing success, it is possible for a woman to forget that she is just human. Many times, a woman chews more than she can swallow. The multiplicity of tasks and roles that must be accomplished can befuddle you to the point of losing focus. The temptation to multitask is high.

Successful women know how to prioritize. After all, you have only 24 hours to perform your tasks and almost a third of this time will be spent sleeping. The best strategy in this case is to prioritize. List all the tasks that you have to do and rate them in order of importance and urgency. Do not let what you can do tomorrow affect what needs to be done today if you want to be a successful woman.

  1. Excel At What You Do

Success for a woman comes through excellent performance. I am not talking about perfection, but doing your best in whatever you do. In a world where women are considered inferior to men in many societies, nothing beats a woman who knows her trade and accomplishes with the highest level of expertise.

The best strategy to overcome negative comments and reactions to your roles and position as a woman is to work diligently and deliver quality services and products in whatever you are tasked to do. People will respect you for your accomplishments and will find it hard to find excuses to discriminate against you.

  1. Watch What You Eat

You are what you eat. I know you have heard this so many times before that you wonder why I have to repeat it here. The question is: do you believe you are what you eat? There is an obesity epidemic and many women are practically disabled or are at the risk of imminent death because of poor eating habits.

Success for a woman demands that she eats a balanced diet. Kindly discard those sweet but nutrient-deficient fries from your diet. Those hamburgers, soft drinks and salty foods that you eat in excess are not the diet of successful women. You need to have a healthy body to function optimally, and it starts with your choice of diet and the times you when you take your meals.

  1. Exercise Regularly

The modern successful woman is confronted by a unique but delicate situation. Our foremothers (is there is anything like that) worked in farms or performed manual duties while their husbands went out to look for food and other necessities. Today, the workplace is more of a stationary desk with a computer where almost all transactions are carried out. The proliferation of lifestyle diseases is the dreadful repercussion of this lifestyle.

Success for a woman means not only eating well but also exercising the body. You need to go out and practice yoga or run regularly. Alternatively, you can attend a gym and exercise under the guidance of a fitness trainer. Endeavor to stretch out your body and overcome excess weight / fat. Working out rejuvenates your body and mind while nourishing your skin and making it look younger and healthier.

  1. Don’t Try To Please Everyone

Bill Cosby, the great American comedian was once asked to give his secret of success. He retorted that he did not know the secret of success but he knew the one for failure. “The secret of failure is trying to please everybody,” he said. That is timeless wisdom on having your own principles and adhering to them.

Successful women set their goals and set out to achieve them. They do not bother doing what others want. Remember you cannot please everybody because everyone will want you to meet a different set of expectations. You will end up not pleasing anybody and will create more enemies.

  1. Listen To Critics To Know Where To Improve

Do you get exasperated by people talking negatively about you and wonder when they will stop? Yes, they will, but that will be when they have bid your farewell as you transit to the next world. Successful women know that people must talk about them and a great chunk of what is said will be negative.

Your work is not to bother with the negatives. Rather, listen to what is being said with an eye for improvement. People don’t discuss issues or objects that have no significance. The fact that they are talking about you is enough evidence that you have impacted their lives. Gather what is important from their criticism and find ways to incorporate it in your plans without informing them.

  1. Watch Less TV

You might be wondering what is wrong with me or what my problem is with TV. You may be the type of woman that cannot do without a soap opera or that addictive movie series. Probably you are the political type that must watch news and political analyses without fail. But have you ever wondered what value TV has in your life.

The most successful women list TV as a non-priority. Instead of spending the entire day watching other people acting and making money, successful women engage in other productive pastimes. For example, they read inspirational books or those that relate to their professions. Leave TV to the average achiever or non-achiever. Live such that you can be the subject of a TV program, not the viewer.

  1. Keep A Circle Of Genuine Friends

You are a human being and human touch is very important for your success. You need to have a circle of genuine friends in all spheres of your life, be it professional or social. You need people who can listen to you, offer advice, critique you constructively or simply be there for you.

To be successful, you need people who feel you. They must be people who share your ideals. I am not just talking about your family. You need more than that. This circle of friends will keep you motivated and informed. Successful women do not succeed alone. I need to conclude by saying that behind every successful woman are these twelve principles and especially a clique of genuine friends.

Better Your Life – Stop Being A Busy Bee!

In the quest for a better life, people hustle every day. It appears to be a virtue and a reason to rejoice for you to be busy throughout your life. Busyness has become the norm to the extent that we think it is mandatory to be engaged in some kind of activity all the time. But is that really true?

Understandably, in a world where economic conditions do not favour the majority, those who idle around or want to live on the generosity of others or the state are frowned upon. You and I know people who have two or three jobs. Such individuals sleep for a few hours as they try to get as much money as possible to make ends meet. But is that the ideal life?

I want to suggest that none of us likes being so busy that we fail to enjoy even the money we work so hard to earn. Busyness is not what many of us want to portray it to be – a virtue and something to be proud about. We do it out of necessity.

Reversing the ‘Busyness’ Trend

Did you know it is possible to earn a living, start living and still avoid glorifying busyness? Here’s how:

  1. Living in the Present

Being busy does not negate the fact that you have a real life that encompasses family, friends, interaction, pastimes and challenges. Your family, friends and community need you and you need them equally. Life is not all about working ceaselessly. You must create time for people and institutions that encourage and motivate you through your daily struggles and challenges.

Living in the presence means that you recognise the roles other people play in your life. It implies reaching out to your children, partner and other relatives in mutual support. It means participating in the life of your community and reaching out to the less fortunate. None of these ideals can be achieved when you are engaged in endless activity.

  1. Avoid Multi-tasking

I once heard that women are better at multitasking than men. I used to consider multitasking a virtue – not any more. You and I know mothers who spend time on social media when they return home after a busy day. This despite the fact that the parent has been away at work most of the day; the kids were in school, and the only time they have to interact is spent by the parent surfing the internet.

Next time you go to a restaurant, take time to observe what people on the same table, who came together to socialize, are doing. More time is spent looking one’s phone as opposed to talking with each other. Multitasking is a form of busyness and it is killing relationships at a very high rate. Why not set the phone aside and look at your partner as you engage in productive communication?

Me and my friends have set up kind of a rule, we don’t put our mobile phones on the table when having breakfast, lunch or dinners together. Only if there is something urgent and we expect an important call. It is really important that we spend a good time together and connect with each other!

  1. Remember to Attend to Yourself

Being busy most of the time robs you of the most important person – yourself. I really don’t know what exactly people mean when they tell one another to take care. Is it about security or body hygiene? What is clear, though, is that unless you attend to yourself you will soon lose the steam and health to be busy.

Those who own cars understand the importance of fueling and regular service. Why then do we forget to take care of the very body, mind and soul that make our busyness possible? Take time off and spend it with yourself, you will discover so much. Pamper the body by eating a balanced diet and exercising. Look for the best lotions and perfumes to moisten your skin. Never forget to meditate and connect spiritually with the Supreme Being and your fellow beings.

  1. Delegate Tasks

At the risk of appearing to be delivering an academic lecture, allow me to remind you that you are not everything in this world. Your company needs you but you are not indispensable. The institution you work for was there before you and will continue to operate the day after you are laid to rest at the cemetery. In essence, life can and will go on without you. Your busyness will not save you from the fact that time a time will come when you will have to exit.

Learn to share out tasks instead of attempting to do everything yourself. There are many other employees working under you or with you who have the same or similar responsibilities. Younger workers also need to learn how to perform the tasks you are carrying out. Hallo? There is something called succession management! Even in your own business, your children need to learn so that they can take over when you are too old to work or when your turn comes to join your ancestors in the next world.

Before you become a workaholic with no social life, remember the following:

  1. You cannot carry the entire world on your shoulder. Busyness will not help you to solve all the problems of an organisation or family.
  2. Your body has a limit. It cannot work forever and regular periods of rest are necessary for you to operate maximally the following day.
  3. You are a social animal. You need others and they need you. Being busy is akin to severing a limb from your body.
  4. Busyness exhausts your body and the more you work in this state, the less productive you become.

  1. Your life is more important than material belongings. What you need is a sense of belonging to a family or community. Busyness is vanity.
  2. When your history is written, you will be remembered for what you did to change peoples’ lives and not how much money you earned.
  3. You are part of a community. You are either an asset or a liability. The best way to become an asset is to participate in communal events.
  4. Stop glorifying busyness. Don’t talk about being busy as if it is winning a billion dollar lottery.
  5. Develop a program for your life and determine to have more time for yourself, your family and the community.
  6. Remember you only live once and there will be no rehearsal. Don’t wait for the time you will be less busy to take care of other important matters because that time will never come.

I did struggle with being very busy especially when I just started my business 10 years ago. I was and still am very ambitious, but I forgot and didn’t know about how to take care of my body, spirit and mind at the time. But after a while, when loosing the control, social life and not paying attention to my family, thanks god I have reacted and started looking for how to balance it all. Today I must say meditation and taking time off for myself and with friends/family is great benefit for me and everyone who is around myself to! I can proudly say that!
